I have recently produced this title sequence for the Madrid based event Mad in Spain. The typographic elements are actually ceramic-based vintage lettering, which was hand-painted and later filmed in natural scenery. The intention was to depict very distinct elements as part of the same ecosystem, similarly to the various distinct speakers coming together for the event.

Below is a short behind the scenes video that illustrates some of the process. The project was shot using various lenses, but mainly a 14mm, 16-35mm, 50mm and a 100mm macro on a Canon 5D using the Dynamic Perception dolly.

I recently directed this spot (named "Chrome Away From Home"), which was produced by Superfad in a collaboration with BBH.

Production began with style frames and once the look was established we began animating them digitally. Each animation frame was later printed on a separate sheet of paper using an Epson 3880 printer, which was a first for us.

Throughout the course of the shoot, a stop-motion animator worked with a hand model/actor to create the sequence, which was shot on a Canon 5D using Dragon and a motion controlled rig. The spot was released on Google Chrome blog.

This organic cotton t-shirt features the quote "My work is a game, a very serious game" by Dutch artist M.C. Escher, whom has irrevocably been a great influence in my decision to pursue Graphic Design as a career.

At age 15 I visited a major exhibit of Escher's life work at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and was extremely impressed. Although the work was clearly art, I saw it as bridge to Graphic Design and realized how the two could come together. This was particularly more apparent when I saw how highly technical his process was.

Since then I have always kept that experience close to my heart and therefore wanted to further spread some of Escher's wisdom, in my own way. Similar to many of his artworks, the graphic on this shirt looks different depending how you look at it. From far away, it looks like a simple pattern or a flat shape. As you approach it, the quote becomes clearer and eventually pops out.

This typographic artwork was created manually. No effects were utilized to create the simulated dimension. Each graphic is screen printed on American Apparel organic fine jersey short sleeve t-shirts and are available for sale on my Esty shop.

Installations at The World of Coca-Cola MuseumIn the fall of 2011 Superfad and were approached by Second Story to creative direct the execution of various installations for the new Secret Formula exhibit at the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta, Ga. In this new exhibit, visitors are challenged on their ideas about what is fiction and what is truth about Coca-Cola's secret formula.

This first, called Taste Maker, installation simulates an antique soda fountain and allows visitors to interact with knobs, mixing animated graphic representations of various flavor qualities. The frames below give an idea of how the installation looks like in the end. We contributed to the project by designing the interface as well as other animation components.

Here are a few style frames for the different taste qualities.
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_01.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="360" width_o="640" height_o="360" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_01_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="12880667" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_02.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="360" width_o="640" height_o="360" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_02_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="12880670" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_03.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="360" width_o="640" height_o="360" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/11366/1608524/mix_03_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="12880672" />
The images below, designed by Gretchen Nash, illustrate how the animated end sequence looks like for this exhibit. Visitors get to watch it at the end of their attempt at replicating Coca-Cola's formula. By tapping on a button with Coke's branding, the sequence initiates, simulating a microscopic look at a fictitious assembly of Coke's ingredients.

In an effort to promote my short art film "The New America", currently in production, I created these products (poster, t-shirt and notebook), which sponsors of the project will receive and others will be able to purchase at a very limited amount on Etsy.

The Poster: This letterpress poster is 21 1/4 x 15 1/4 in and features 3 colors (black, silver and gold) as well as blind embossed details on a Lettra Pearl 110# paper.

The Notebook: This limited edition notebook was designed as a gift to accompany the wood artworks produced for "The New America" short film.

These notebooks were printed with vegetable-based inks on 100% recycled papers with offset presses powered by renewable energy. They were also produced locally in Portland.

This 32-page 3.5in x 5in notebook is printed on 100% Recycled Chipboard, 18pt. Kraft and Interior: 100% Recycled Text, 70# White. It uses High Quality Offset Printing with Vegetable-Based Inks.

I designed this for Vells' last album. Sadly the band is no longer publishing music, but their first cd still remains as some of my favorite music out there.
